Intake of Selected Nutrients by Children in the Czech Republic
Brázdová Z., Matijová H., Fiala J.

Summary:

Dietary study of selected nutrient intake in representative sample of 980 Czech children of junior and senior school age was conducted during the fall of the year 1998. Two dietary assessment methods were used: repeated 24-hr recall and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with semiquantitative approach focused on main dietary sources of vitamins and calcium. Nutrient intake was calculated from 24-hr recalls using the values of nutrient profiles of food groups and subgroups. The results showed inadequate intake of vitamin C (80 and 51 % of recommendation in the junior and senior group, resp.), vitamin E (69 and 60 %, resp.) and calcium (66 and 54 %, resp.). The method of FFQ was evaluated as an inappropriate one in assessed age, giving three times higher values of nutrient intake comparing with the controled 24-hr recall. The results of nutrient intake in a sample of Czech children show the require of better nutrition education. It is highly recommended to increase the consumption of foods from the groups of vegetable, fruit and milk and milk products, fortificated, if possible, eg. by iodine.
