Summary:
The paper gives basic definitions of the Picture Archiving and Communicating System (PACS), it
discusses the current state and meaning of the DICOM and HL7 standards, reviews PACS advantages,
disadvantages and risks, especially following its implementation into Hospital Information
System(HIS).Finally, perspectives of next development of PACS as a basic step of computer-assisted
medicine are mentioned.
