Summary: Since 1990, transesophageal echocardiography has been spreading beyond echocardiographic laboratories to the everyday care of surgical and
intensive care patients. Its effectiveness as a clinical monitor during anaesthesia and critical care has been well established. This article shows the
main advantages and challenges of this rapidly evolving method.
