Summary:
The case described is a 30-year-old female patient with
recurring massive haemorrhage from the anus. The source
of bleeding was a large cavernous haemangioma of the
rectum, which extended from the rectosigmoid colon to the
distal third of the rectum. Acute bleeding episodes were
managed only temporarily with repeated endoscopic sclerotization,
ligation or selective and superselective angiography
and embolization of the inferior mesenteric artery
and its branches. Only a low anterior resection of the
affected bowel with coloanal anastomosis was curative.
We present endoscopic, angiographic and operative findings.
