Summary:
Helicid treatment extending over eight weeks led in a group of patients with reflux oesophagitis (n = 129) in
75 % of the cases to complete recovery of lesions, apparent on endoscopy, in the great majority (95.4 %) at
least to an endoscopically verified improvement. The finding was not evaluated microscopically, because it
was not possible to evaluate the findings by pathologists from different departments. The effect on subjective
reflux complaints was even more marked. In 99.2% of the group treatment either eliminated the complaints
or led to improvement. Complete disappearance of complaints was recorded in more than 3/4 of the group
(77.5 %), in 21.7 % only partial improvement was recorded. Only in one patient treatment had no effect. The
purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the investigated preparation in curing macroscopic
oesophageal inflammatory changes in the course of two months. The study thus does not evaluate the problem
of long-term treatment of the disease. Undesirable effects were not serious and not frequent. It may be
concluded that short-term treatment of different types of reflux oesophagitis with Helicid is very successful,
safe and well tolerated. The results are fully comparable with analogous results reported in the world
literature.
