Summary:

The authors report a case of a blunt abdominal trauma in a sixteen-year-oldmale. Pancreatic injury was complicated by the development of a pseudocyst which was continuously replenished by secretions from an injured secondary duct. The patient’s initial clinical condition, laboratory and radiological findings permitted conservative treatment. Neither repeated punctures of the pseudocyst, nor drainage of the major pancreatic duct led to a decrease of serum amylase or improvement of the patient’s condition. Replenishment and gradual enlargement of the pseudocyst were reasons for performing percutaneous drainage which resulted in complete recovery within 84 days. No complications were encountered. At present, the function and ultrasonographic appearance of the pancreas are normal. The authors discuss the published reports on percutaneous drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts.

Key words: blunt abdominal trauma – pancreatic pseudocyst – percutaneous drainage
