Summary:
The authors describe their own experience with the surgical treatment of supratentorial cavernomas
in 14 patients and review the contemporary literature discussing these lesions. Cavernomas of the brain
are in the era of magnetic resonance a much more frequently diagnosed form of vascular malformation
than before introduction of this imaging method. The objective of the paper is above all to draw
attention to the fact that supratentorial cavernomas are from the neurosurgeon’s aspect practically
always indicated for surgery, the objective being radical removal of the cavernoma. The dominating
clinical manifestation of a supratentorial cavernoma is an epileptic attack. Thus surgical treatment of
these lesions becomes part of functional neurosurgery.
