Summary:
Evaluation of 30 definite MS patients was assessed twice on Kurtzke EDSS (Expanded Disability Status
Scale)and twice on MRI after a one –year interval within our pilot study. There were 3 possible outcomes
in EDSS after one year, deterionarion, stabilization or improvement.Lesion load in MRI was assessed
automatically from FLAIR (Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery)images with the use of our own
software we developed for an ordinary PC platform. The partial correlation between the clinical status
rated in EDSS scores and the total lesion volume could be traced only in the group that deteriorated
during our one-year observation. No correlation was found in the other 2 groups and in all 30 patients.
The aim of our pilot study was to estimate the possibilities of MRI to assess the development of the
disease as well as its progress and monitoring of therapy.
