Contemporary Problem of Blind-deafness from the Aspect

Summary: The term blind-deafness implies a serious medical affection which is characterized
by the combination of bilaterally impaired hearing and eyesight. Care of these patients is a serious
medico-social problem. The objective of the paper is to present contemporary views on the definition, suggestions for the classification and evaluation of blind-deafness and combined bilateral
affection of hearing and eyesight of various grades from the aspect of the otorhinolaryngologist.
In evaluating the severity and possibilities of subsequent damages of these conditions the authors
took into account the classification of hearing affections as suggested by the WHO working group
for the prevention of deafness and hypacusia and the legal code of the Czech republic.
