Summary: In patients with stricture of urethra and lacking autologous
tissue, the reconstruction of urethra requires alternative
material. In such cases we have used an acellular
collagen matrix prepared from submucosa of the pig
intestine. The material is supplied by the Cook company
as a preparation for strengthening abdominal wall in the
hernia plasty and to solve stress incontinence in women.
The material is easily available and adjustable for a correct
size; the manipulation is simple as well as implantation
in the region of urethra by the on lay technique. The
use of acellular collagen matrix represents a simple method
for solving strictures of urethra, which are not suitable
for resection and anastomosis. The endoscopic control
in the early post-operation period revealed a good
epithelization of the graft. The evaluation of results requires
a large cohort of patients observed for the period of
at least one year.
