Summary:

The authors evaluate the results of a clinical study by comparing diagnostic values of CT colonography made by means of 16-channel multidetector computing tomography evaluated by using virtual endoscopy and optical colonoscopy. The examination was made in hypotonie after rectal insufflation of air with the use of collimation 16 x 0.75 mm. In a group of 20 patients having provided their written consent the authors performed MDCT colonography with virtual endoscopy and the examination by optical endoscopy in a single day. In MDCT colonography with virtual endoscopy they reached 92.9% sensitivity for the detection of polyps when compared with optical endoscopy, 68.8% specificity, 72.2% positive predictive value and 91.6% negative predictive value. The results indicate that CT colonoscopy may be used for the detection of polyps in the colon.

Key words: CT colonography - colonoscopy - colorectal carcinoma - virtual endoscopy
