Summary:
Implantation of programmable infusion pumps becomes, despite the economical demands, part of
therapeutic procedures even in our health care system. Despite the technical perfection of the
implanted device, possible complications cannot be excluded and may in some cases threaten the
patient’s life. This presentation describes in detail the possibilities of prevention, timely recognition
and possible therapeutic management in complications associated with technical failure of the infusion
pump, surgical and inflammatory complications and those resulting from drug overdose. The authors
attempt to review all necessary information for all physicians who could come in contact with patients
treated in this manner.
