Protein arrays in modern clinical biochemistry

Summary:

       The emergence of novel technologies allows researchers to facilite the comprehensive analyses of genomes, transcriptomes, and proteomes in disease diagnostics, progression and treatment. Protein arrays (biochips) have been used for the protein identification and for study of different protein interactions (enzyme-substrate, antibody-antigen, protein- -DNA/RNA, receptor-ligand) and/or study of protein post-translation modifications (phosphorylation, oxidation, etc.). Array-based technology has been used to identify protein-markers that might be important for diagnostics and therapy. These techniques are smaller than conventional testing systems and highly economical in the use of specimens and reagents. This article summarizes fundamentals and recent developments in protein arrays technology and its potential use in clinical diagnostics and molecular medicine.
