Summary:

MR volumometry has become an important tool for monitoring chronic diseases of the central nervous system including patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A change in the total volume of plaques (lesion load) during a defined time span is correlated with the clinical status according to EDSS (Expanded Disability Status Scale). MR volumometry has been demonstrated on MR images in the FLAIR modus. The lesion load has been calculated twice within the time span of one year between two examinations. The recent approach of monitoring black holes on T1W images is discussed together with the evaluation of brain atrophy. The authors’ own software has been used with success. It has a high level of accuracy comparable with world centres of diagnostics and monitoring of MS.

Key words: magnetic resonance imaging – multiple sclerosis – volumometry
