Condition of the Immune System in Patients with Craniocerebral Injury
Smrčka M., Klabusay M. 1 , Juráň V., Vidlák M., Máca K.

Summary:

Extracranial complications in patients after craniocerebral injury cause, no doubt, deterioration of the clinical status of the patients and the Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS). Disorders of the immune system may be one of the causes of development of pneumonia or other inflammatory complications. In a group of 8 patients after craniocerebral injury of different severity the authors demonstrate immunity changes during the post-injury period. In the majority of patients cellular immunity declines in particular T-lymphocytes (CD3+) as well as of so-called helper cells (CD4+). Conversely B lymphocytes usually increase. As to humoral parameters there was always an elevated level of C-reactive protein but reduced levels of components C3 and C4 of the complement. IgE values were frequently many times increased to levels typical for atopy or parasitic infection, it is however due to a s tress reaction. Patients with impaired immunity had a tendency to develop more frequently infectious complications. Immu- nity disorders were more frequent in patients with a lower Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). The prognostic value of immunity disorders after craniocerebral injury is low from the aspect of GOS.

        Key words: immunity, craniocerebral injury
