Summary:
A 16-year-old boy inhaled a small amount of kerosene in a magician show of flame spouting.
Within a short time there developed respiratory complaints - cough, fever, pain in the chest. An
X-ray of the chest confirmed suspect aspiration. In view of the time that had elapsed since that
event, it was not possible to carry out a bronchoalveolar lavage any more, and antibiotics and
corticoids were administered. The treatment gradually healed the acute state of the patient.
Over the following five months there occurred three relapses of pneumonia at the site of greatest
alteration in the lung parenchyma. CT of the chest revealed the gradual development of
a picture typical of kerosene aspiration, the appearance of minute cystic formations - pneumatoceles.
Complications in the sense of developing focal fibrosis of the lung did not occur in this
patient.
Key words:
kerosene pneumonia - kerosene inhalation - pneumatocele - adolescence.
