Summary: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of vestibular habituation training (VHT) using the
Norré-Novotný (1987) method in patients with vertigo of peripheral origin and unclear aetiology. The
evaluation criteria were objective decrease in VHT score and subjective assessment of a patient’s
disability. Thirteen patients were examined and an organic origin of vertigo was excluded by
a complex of neurological and otorhinolaryngological examinations and other examination methods.
Evaluation of VHT was done before and after the VHT. Based on positive reactions during individual
examination of VHT a rehabilitation program was established. A patient exercises the VHT alone
three times a day for 6 weeks. After six weeks of training results showed an average decrease in
VHT score of 8.46 (± 7.1) points, Wilcoxon’s test indicated highly significant decrease of VHT score
of the whole group (p<0.001). An improvement of subjective disability was found after six weeks of
VHT in 92.3%. Vestibular habituation training is an effective treatment for vertigo of peripheral origin
and of inclear aetiology without apparent organic origin.
