Summary:
The authors present an account of their initial experience with the administration of botulotoxin (Dysport,
Beaufor Ipsen International) by the intrasphincteric route in functional disorders of the sphincter of Oddi
associated with marked digestive symptomatology. In four patients botulotoxin was administered repeatedly
by means of a needle applicator to the site of the sphincter of Oddi. Digestive complaints were in all cases
positively influenced till they disappeared completely. The method of administration is relatively simple and
associated with a minimal risk. The function of the sphincter is preserved and may be only temporarily
paralyzed. The clinical effect persists for several months and can be prolonged by repeated administration.
The authors assume that this method is more physiological and in particular much safer than endoscopic
papillosphincterotomy, which still may be used in future.
