Summary:

Pathological conditions of the internal auditory canal and cerebellopontine angle are solved by various operative approaches (retrosigmoid, transpetrosal, middle fossa). Perfect knowledge of the topographical anatomy, including varieties and anomalies, is the basic prerequisite of skull base surgery. The authors present a metric analysis of topographical relations of the internal auditory canal on 100 temporal bones. The group consists of 25 adult male and 25 female dry skull bases. The assessed values are consistent with the literature as regards the width-length index of the population. A high position of the jugular bulb is the most frequent and the most clinical important variety. The results confirm the more frequent occurrence of a higher position of the bulb on the right side.No statistical significant intersexual differences were found in the set of monitored signs.

Key words: temporal bone, internal auditory canal, anatomy.
