The Supplement is dedicated to contribution of the Czech and Slovak gastroenterologists and hepatologists to the scientific progress mostly in the last 40 years, but older authors like J. Ev. Purkyně, V. Lambl, V. Procháska and others are mentioned, too. In 17 chapters, all main fields of gastroenterology, pancreatology and hepatology are dealt with by renowned domestic specialists. The important part of each chapter is a Bibliography with a stress on publications in foreign medical journals. First few chapters describe history of the Czech gastroenterology and the role of Czech gastroenterologists in international organizations (Z. Mařatka), and Czech contribution to the development of digestive endoscopy (J. Kotrlík, Z. Mařatka). Next chapters are dedicated to esophageal disease (M. Duda, A. Hep), immunology of chronic gastritis (B. Fixa), IBD (M. Lukáš, Z. Mařatka), screening of colorectal cancer (P. Frič, M. Zavoral, P. Pokorný), and functional digestive disorders (V. Jirásek). The importance of Helicobacter pylori is mentioned in the next chapter (J. Bureš, B. Fixa, L. Jurgoš, M. Sedláčková), and also the relationship of Helicobacter pylori to functional disorders (B. Fixa) is described. The chapter on Pancreatic disease and Pancreatobliary endoscopy and Surgery is written by P. Dítě, J. Špičák and A. Vavrečka. Liver diseases are mentioned in a special chapter which also includes portal hypertension and liver transplantation (Z. Mareček, M. Brodanová, P. Hůlek, M. Ryska). Supplement also brings information on gastrointestinal endocrinology (J. Škrha, R. Hyrdel, I. Ďuriš, S. Kiňová), genetic disease (M. Koudová, M. Macek Jr), lymphatic gastrointestinal system (V. Bartoš), and nutrition in gastroenterology (I. Beňo). The Supplement is most useful as an overview of the contemporary state and level of Czech and Slovak gastroenterology and hepatology, and, last but not least, reminds the reader of unjustly ignored contribution of Czech and Slovak authors to the World Science.
