Summary:
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) appears in about 25% of children with diabetes type 1. It is a metabolic complication induced by insulin deficiency and increased production of counterregulating hormones. There are various triggering factors, which cause evolution of various pathogenic mechanisms, which in the final outcome result in endangered life of the child. The article presents a clinical picture and laboratory parameters of DKA. The therapy of DKA is risks and possible complications are elaborated in the article. In conclusion the authors briefly review the situation of the hospitalized children in the Children Diabetological Center of Slovak Republic in the years 2002-2005.
