Summary:

This article describes the case of a patient who was examined for fever of unknown origin by Positron Emission Tomography (PET). PET detected increased FDG uptake in the region of major arteries, which showed inflammatory affliction of arterial walls. The diagnosis of Temporal (Giant Cell) Arteritis was confirmed by biopsy. During corticosteroid treatment a decrease of both inflammatory laboratory parameters and FDG uptake showed up on the control PET scan. PET supports a diagnosis of large vessel vasculitis in case of increased FDG uptake in patients with fever of unknown origin.

Key words: positron emission tomography – FDG – temporal arteritis – large vessel vasculitis
