Summary:
Electrothermocoagulation of the pulpous nucleus of the intervertebral disc, which causes exsiccation
and wrinkling of tissue, could become a simple alternative of minimally invasive therapy of disc hernias.
The authors used in experiments on egg white and necroptic material a thermistor electrode with
a diameter of 2 mm and area of 28.3 mm 2 by means of which they acted on the tissue using a temperature
of 95 °C for three minutes and obtained a „unit lesion“ with a volume of 1/3 ml in egg white and 1/2 ml
in the nc. pulposus. By shifting the electrode this „unit lesion“ can be extended.
