Summary: Cardiovascular diseases caused by atherosclerosis are still the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the
Czech Republic and other advanced countries of the world. Large long-term studies convincingly show that
atherosclerotic changes begin in the childhood and correlation of these changes with the same risk factors as in
adults individuals is possible. The recommendation issued by theAmerican Heart Association was adjusted in view
of new knowledge for adults and children in the year 2002. This article specified the strategy for practical use of
the guidelines in pediatric practice.
