Summary:

Intracranial schwannomas account for about 6.8–8 % of all brain tumours. The majority of schwannomas arise from the vestibulocochlear nerve (80–90 % of intracranial schwannomas). Intracerebral schwannomas represent only 2 %. Only five cases of malignant intracerebral schwannomas with supratentorial localization have been described in the literature to date (four in English, one in Japanese) and none with previous intracerebral hematoma. Here we describe the case of a man who first surgery an operation for intracerebral hematoma with brain swelling. Six months later a malignant supratentorial schwannoma was discovered as an extracranially growing mass.

Key words: malignant schwannoma, brain tumour, intracerebral haemorrhage, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour
