Summary:
Cognitive impairment is consistently reported for patients with schizophrenia and is considered as
a core defi cit in this disease. Impaired memory, attention and executive functions are main domains
underlying multiple neuropsychological defi cit. Evidence is accumulating that these impairments
are predominantly related to abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex and mediotemporal structures
of the brain. Cognitive defi cits are closely connected with malfunctioning in everyday life situations
and with a quality of life of patients.
