Importance of Endorectal Ultrasonography for Sta- ging of Rectal Carcinoma

Summary:

       The objective of the paper was to evaluate the accuracy of staging of rectal carcinoma by means of rectal ultrasonography. Correct staging makes it possible to select the most suitable therapeutic approach focused on surgical procedures sparing the sphincters and on reduction of local relapses. Tumours classified according to the inernational TNM classification into groups T1 and T2 are indicated for immediate surgical resection, tumours of groups T3 and T4 are indicated for preope- rative radiotherapy.
