The author describes the evolution in the understanding of metabolic syndrome, its basic clinical and labo- ratory features and their role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. He points out the poor clarity and dis- putes in MS definition, and reiterates the necessity to intervene in all known risk factors of atherosclerosis for effective prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
