Summary:
S u m m a r y: The objective of the work was to evaluate the influence of some selected factors on
the development of cicatricial post-cannulation tracheal stenoses.
In a group of 44 patients treated by surgical operation (36 resections and 11 implantations of
a T-tube) the following observations were evaluated: patients’ age, site of stenosis, period of cannu-
lation, interval of decannulation - symptoms (voluntary interval, length of stenosis, lumen of
stenosis). For statistical evaluation of the relationship between the investigated characteristics
Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used, the statistical tests were evaluated at the 5% level of
significance.
The most frequent site of stenoses were the borderline of the upper and medium third of the trachea
which suggests development of the stenosis at the site of pressure exerted by the balloon and above
it. We proved that with the duration of cannulation and advancing age also the voluntary interval
becomes longer. The increasing duration of cannulation was the cause of a longer stenosis. A corre-
lation between the duration of cannulation and the lumen of the stenosis was not found.
The development of tracheal stenoses is influenced not only by the type of cannulation of the trachea
but also by some factors such as the period of cannulation, patients’ age.
Key words:
stenosis of the trachea, development of tracheal stenosis, factors influencing tracheal
stenosis.
