Human Plasma Lipoproteins Modulate the Prostaglandin Secretion by Endothelial Cells

Summary:

       On the model of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) the authors presented evidence of the multiplication of the atherogenic properties of VLDL and LDL due to their stimulating effect on the thromboxane A2 (TxA2) secretion by the endothelial cells. The vasoconstrictor, thrombogenic and atherogenic effect of TxA2 can influence the vessel wall, when the LDL and VLDL concentrations are high. In contrary, the protective antiatherogenic properties of HDL and HDL2, HDL3 subfractions are enhanced by their ability to stimulate the endothelial secretion of prostacycline (PGI2) and to inhibit the secretion of TxA2. The ratio PGI2/TxA2, which is the limiting factor for vascular homeostasis is > 1 and thus the beneficial effect of high PGI2 plasma levels on the vascular wall can be enforced. In terms of PGI2/TxA2 balance, a better antiatherogenic effect was observed with HDL2 subfraction.
