Summary:

Authors studied experimentally changes of the glycoconjugate composition in the secretion of tracheal goblet cells after intratracheal administration of 0.5 ml triiodinated contrast agent (Iomeron 300, Bracco-Byk Gulden). Specimens for both conventional and lectin histochemistry were collected 40 minutes after exposure. In comparison with control animals, a decrease occurred in the percentage of the goblet cells containing acidic sialylated glycoconjugates. The percentage of the goblet cells containing neutral glycoconjugates remained unchanged. The intratracheal administration of Iomeron 300 evoked statistically significant ( a < 0.01) changes in the percentage of the tracheal goblet cells containing acidic sialylated glycoconjugates.
