Summary:
Laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) is a method used in differential diagnostics of vocal
cord motility disorders. Among other LEMG techniques the percutaneous LEMG is probably the
most widely used one. Six patients investigated in 2000 at the NET Dept., University Hospital in
Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, are discussed. The neural lesion is characterized by denervation
of MUP. LEMG provides the assessment of the site of the neural lesion and the extent of the lesion.
LEMG is also suitable for evaluation of latent paresis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Idiopathic
denervation and/or central vocal cord motility disorders should be investigated by a neurologist.
Forecast of neural laryngeal lesions by LEMG is possible, LEMG can also follow up the lesion. LEMG
is limited by the patient’s ability of collaboration and the experience of the investigating physician.
Complications include bleeding, oedema or haematoma, the investigation is nevertheless considered
safe. LEMG is an important investigation method especially in the detailed differential diagnostics
of vocal cord motility disorders and for assessment of the prognosis of vocal cord paresis.
Key words:
electromyography, vocal cord, paresis.
