Summary:
Objective: Evaluation of m. Crohn clinical profile, its diagnostics and therapy and epidemiology in Slovakia.
Methodology: The retrospective study analysed the results of the sample of 61 patients with m. Crohn. The
average duration of illness was 5,5 years. There were 3 groups of patients: 20 patients with mild disease in
group I., 15 patients with moderate disease in group II., and 26 patients with severe disease in group III.
Results: A positive family-history and smoking had no significant influence on the development of the disease.
32 patients had mostly a right-side affection, 17 patients had mostly a left-side affection, 9 patients had
mixed-type and 3 patients had pancolitis. A total of 38 extraintestinal symptoms in 26 patients were recorded.
Significant histological evidence of m. Crohn was documented in 44 patients, i.e. in 72%. The average number
of visits per patient per year in ambulatory care was 8.8, the average hospital stay was 9.0 days per patient
per year. A total of 37 surgical complications occurred which needed in 33 cases surgical interventions. In 17
cases, i.e. in 27.9% surgery recorded of m. Crohn. One patient had on average 9.7 different examinations. The
average number of some parameters per patient per year: drugs consumption 27 packs, working incapacity –
20.1 days, partial disability –3.6 days, full disability –9.6 days e. g. total 33.3 days of health and social
disability. The prevalence of m. Crohn in Slovakia is ca 40.6 cases and incidence ca 7.37 cases per 100 000
inhabitants.
Conclusions: The quality of m. Crohn treatment is satisfactory. The standard of the diagnostic process could be
improved, especially as regards early detection, because the 27.9% revealed surgical intervention is higher
than desirable.
