Algorithm of Imaging Methods in Examinations of Intracranial Tumours - Discussion
Nekula J. 1 , Kala M. 2 , Mysliveček M. 3 , Buřval S. 1

Summary:

The authors present a review of modern imaging methods and their importance for early, rapid and accurate diagnosis of intracranial tumours. Computed tomography is usually the method of first choice, it detects the great majority of tumours but for detailed diagnosis before possible surgery it must be supplemented by other visualization methods. Magnetic resonance is optimal for imaging tumours of the sella and neighbouring areas and of expansions in the posterior cranial fossa. Modern isotope methods, in particular PET, are important for evaluation of relapses of tumours. Angiograp- hy is reserved for imaging of blood vessels supplying the tumour, in particular in the area of the cranial base, and it is frequently supplemented by embolization. Stereotactic biopsy is indicated in particular in tumours which will not be operated or in expansions where the etiology of the pathological lesion is not clear.
