Summary: The authors present a retrospective analysis of histopathological findings in 69 patients with larynx cancer. In addition to macroscopic tumor structures the authors also evaluated structures of the adjacent mucosa and soft tissue in paralaryngeal area. In a prevailing number of patients the authors detected squamous cancer with different degree of differentiation. The Chi-square test was ušed to statistically prove correlation of the grading and primary localization (p=0.05). The analysis of structures in mucosa surrounding the tumor revealed dysplastic changes in 53.6% of patients. The proportion of dysplastic changes in glottic tumors reached 74% and those in supraglottic tumors 43%. Metaplastic changes prevailed in supraglottic tumors. Statistical analysis of the dependence of the degree of dysplastic changes in the surroundings of tumor in primary localization of the tumor did not confirm this hypothesis (p=0.05). Regressive changes, osteoid metaplasia and subsequent ossification of cartilage represent deereased resistance of the cartilage to tumor inva-sion with possible further extralaryngeal growth.
