Summary:

Hospital Homolka has a clinical intention to pay special attention to care of patients undergoing vessel and brain surgery, patients with coronary artery diseases, patients with brain strokes, patients in intensive care units, etc. Of 260 beds of 9 intensive care units (ICU), there are 75 critical care beds. Progress in critical medicine shows a necessity to have precise and quick turnovers on requirements of biochemical and haematological lab studies. It was necessary to establish —point-of-care testingif near the patient (bedside monitoring). Five years™ experience in management, cooperation between supported lab and joined departments, efficiency for patients and staff, and economic propositions are described and discussed.

Key words: POCT (point-of-care testing), ICU (intensive care unit), emergency medicine.
