Summary:

Interstitial laser coagulation (ILC) is one of the most effective methods of laser application in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Since June 1998 36 patients with BPH and prostate weight of 25–80 g were operated. No important postoperative complication was seen, the spontaneous urination restored in 2–14 days after the operation with exception of 2 patients. Therapy was successful in 8 of 10 patients with permanent catheter before the operation. They void spontaneously without residual urine. In other patients decreased in 3 months the I-PSS from 19.7 to 8.6 and Qmax improved from 8.9 ml/s to 15.5 ml/s. Results of P/Q study in 6 months showed decrease of obstruction. In 1 man the bladder neck incision and in 1 case transurethral resection of the prostate had to be performed.
