Incidence of Diabetes Mellitus Type II, Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Hyperinsulinaemia in Families of Young Subjects after Ischaemic Cerebrovascular Attack

Summary:

       The authors investigated within the framework of a research project focused on metabolic risk factors of ischaemic cerebrovascular attack, such as arterial hypertension and dyslipidaemia, also the inciden- ce of diabetes mellitus (DM) type II, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and hyperinsulinaemia in families of subjects who had a cerebrovascular attack before the age of 55 years. They examined a group of 266 subjects Œ 74 probands, 55 of their siblings, 96 children, 36 spouses, 3 parents and two grade 2 relatives. In the group of family incidence of risk factors 43 families were included where at least two direct relatives of the proband were examined. In the investigated group DM and or IGT was found in 36% of probands and 44% of their siblings but also in 14% children of the probands which is several times higher than the 5% incidence of these metabolic abnormalities in the general population. Hyperinsulinaemia as an indirect reflection of insulin resistance was significantly manifested in probands (p = 0.04). When evaluating the familial incidence DM and/or IGT were recorded in 30% families. The authors emphasize the importance of the mentioned metabolic disorders in relation to cardiovascular diseases and iCM, the necessity of their active screening and influencing in the context with primary and secondary prevention of these diseases in the risk population.
