Summary: The authors demonstrate in a group of 75 female patients their experience with the use of MR
imaging in assessment of the stage of uterine cervix carcinoma. For MR examination patients in
stage I and II of FIGO classification are indicated. The authors describe the criteria according to
which the stage of the tumour in the MR image is assessed. They introduce a new MR classification
in tumours of clinical stage IB. Its basis is assessment of the dimensions of the tumour in relation
to the dimensions of the uterine cervix. This ratio is a better criterion for selection of the correct
therapeutic procedure than the maximum diameter of the tumour evaluated by the FIGO classification. Based on the new MR classification in patients with tumours stage IB2 preoperative
neoadjuvant chemotherapy was indicated. On MR check-up examination after administration of
neoadjuvant chemotherapy in a group of 24 patients a reduction of tumour volume was proved in
22 patients (92%). The authors describe their own indication pattern for MRexamination in patients
with uterine cervix carcinoma and a pattern of the classification procedure of the tumour based on
MR images.
