Tension-type headache. The possibilities of treatment with botulinum toxin A

Summary:

       Tension-type headache ranks among the most common type of headache. This headache can be episodic or chronic. In the chronic form, one treatment option is the application of botulinum toxin. The mechanism of botulinum toxin effect is not limited to muscle relaxation but also includes modulation of the nociceptive system. Botulinum toxin is safe and effective, it significantly lowers the frequency and intensity of headaches. The authors also provide a review of studies demonstrating a positive effect of botulinum toxin with the aim to inform about treatment options for chronic headaches.
