Homocysteine Remethylation and its Possible Relation to Neurotransmission
Přistoupilová K., Přistoupil T. I.

Summary:

The present theoretical treatise is devoted to the complexmetabolism of 1C units related to the generation and degradation of methyl-dependent neurotransmitters. We consider the importance of tetrahydrofolates (THF) cobalamins and thiolic substances not only in anabolic processes but also in the catabolism of methyl-groups accompanied by release of energy. From the aspect of cell energetics, based predominantly on the reaction of protons and electrons with oxygen, the –CH3 group represents a „parcel“ of potential energy utilizable in neurotransmission. The core of the article is demonstrated in a simplified scheme (Fig. 1).

Key words: folates cobalamin, homocysteine, betaine, creatine, neurotransmission, cell energy.
