Summary:

Haematocolpos, accumulation of blood in frequently markedly dilated vagina (and subsequently in uterus – hematometra) in adolescent girls originated due to hymenal atresia, partial aplasia of vagina or presence of transversal vaginal septum. It becomes manifest during puberty as a cyclic pain in hypogastrium and amenorrhea. The diagnosis is established from anamnesis, gynecological and ultrasound examination and in more complicated cases also by magnetic resonance (MR) examination. In the MR image the content of vagina displays intensity of the signal corresponding the proportion and age of the hemoglobin degradations products. The importance of imaging methods also lays in the demonstration of haematosalpinx and associated anomalies.

Key words: haematocolpos – haematosalpinx – examination methods – magnetic resonance
