Summary:

The authors analyzed 200 panoramatic radiograms of edentulous maxillae and mandibles. They investigated the prevalence, frequency and site of pathological findings. They recorded the presence of pathological findings such as residual fragments of roots, unspecified shadows, retained teeth and light spots. The authors recorded pathological findings in 21.5 % patients. All assessed pathological findings were more frequently in distal parts of the maxilla and mandible as compared with the frontal parts. In the maxilla there were significantly more retained teeth in the mandible there were significantly more residual root fragments and other shadows. The authors consider panoramatic radiography with regard to the high prevalence and clinical impact of detected pathological findings, as indicated and useful before treatment by a complete denture.
