Summary:

Selection of methods in research determines the direction and results obtained. Quantitative research methods are suitable especially for solving particular problems, followed experimentally and measured using various devices. The use of quantitative methods is of advantage is such cases, where we evaluate investigated manifestations in natural environment with various contributing factors and the subject of the researcher (therapist) remained neutral – participating in the observation or even intervenes and interprets the own experience. Hermeneutics – the method of understanding is one of the methods of quantitative research, suitable for exploitation in medicine. It has been applied for centuries for interpretation of cultural artifacts (particularly texts), later also in historic sciences and recently also entering the area of understanding natural realities. The manifestation (pain, disorder, physical asymmetry etc.) is understood, in the hermeneutic position, as a question for interpretation: what consequences are associated with this disorder? Is the origin functional or structural? Was it induced by visceral stimulation? Is there a psychosomatic meaning?

Key words: physiotherapy, hermeneutics, qualitative research, methods of investigation
