Summary: Noninvasive electrocardiography (ECG) – gated angiography with multidetector computed tomography
(MDCTA) is one of the most recent developments in the field of cardiac imaging. These
scanners can be used for calciumscreening (Agatston score) and noninvasive coronary angiography.
Noninvasive MDCTA showed a high diagnostic accuracy in the detection and quantification of
coronary stenoses, in assessment patency of coronary bypasses and stents. It not only offers the
possibility to visualize stenoses but also to differentiate plaque morphology. So MDCTA might
become a much needed and important tool for risk stratification of coronary artery disease of
asymptomatic patients.
Motion artifacts and beam hardening effects occur at the site of calcifications, high concentrations
of contrast, metal stent and surgical clips can degrade the image quality and prevent accurate
assessment of specific vessel segments.
