Summary: Lymphatic mapping and sentinel node biopsy is a widely accepted method for melanoma and breast cancer
staging in indicated cases. However, the use of the method in colorectal cancer is under clinical investigation.
The aim of the paper is to inform medical professionals about the possibilities and limitations of the technique
and to summarize the current state. The actual status of „N“ staging in colorectal cancer is mentioned
and shortly discussed by the authors.
The new method contains some potential to precise nodal staging, especially in colon cancer. Correct indications,
exact technical performance, sufficient experience and laboratory logistics are essential premises.
Further large prospective studies with standardized techniques are needed to evaluate the potential benefits
of this new method.
