Summary: The author presents basic facts on the function of the scalenus muscles and discusses controversial views on their classification as regards their shortening, spasm and weakening as well as controversies on their importance for respiration. The author demonstrates the main diagnostic principles of their functional changes and how the~are influenced by therapy.
