Summary:
Tetanus belongs to „disappearing diseases“ in the Czech Republic. In spite of this some problems exist
which should be solved. There is no immunity after tetanus and paradoxically naturally acquired
immunity may develop. Among current problems in the epidemiology of tetanus in the Czech Republic
is the introduction of a new vaccination scheme in children, where a potential problem may occur if
all four doses are not administered, because more than one third of children have an insufficient level
of antibodies after the administration of three doses of vaccine. There is a long-term problem connected
with the ten-year interval for revaccination and how to vaccinate people where the ten-year interval
expired. Repeatedly there are discussions on the immunity of old people and the system of tetanus
immunoprophylaxis in the injured of this age group. Tetanus in immunized persons is a problem not
only in the Czech Republic but also in other parts of the world. All problems mentioned above are
discussed in the presented paper.
