Summary: The authors present the fi rst part of a complete review of the results of association studies dealing
alcoholism since 1990 until 2003. Most investigated genes related to alcoholism are involved in
dopamine neurotransmission. The present paper is focused on the relationship between dopamine
receptors and alcoholism. Up to now, many DRD1, DRD2, DRD3 and DRD4 polymorphisms have been
studied. Our review resumes and comments these association studies.
