Summary:

Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), one of the L-arginine metabolites, inhibits nitric oxide synthase and therefore indirectly influences the nitric oxide (NO˙) production rate. Vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, platelet aggregation and endothelial dysfunction are caused by decrease of NO. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC) and enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) are useful methods to monitor ADMA concentrations in serum, plasma and urine. The aim of this article is to review and discuss effectiveness of previous methods and compare our results with those of the other authors.

Key words: asymmetric dimethylarginine, HPLC, GC, ELISA, derivatization.
